NRG secured the first Group D playoff place at VALORANT Champions Shanghai by beating Karmine Corp 2-1 on September 29. Karmine Corp opened with a 13-7 win on Ascent, but NRG recovered to take Summit 13-11 and Haven 13-9. The defending world champion completed the group with two victories, while Karmine Corp moves to the decider.
Karmine Corp controlled the first map through a balanced 13-7 Ascent. The EMEA champion won seven rounds on attack and six on defense, never allowing NRG to create the same momentum it had shown in the opening sweep of Nongshim RedForce. The map placed NRG under immediate series pressure and gave KC the first opportunity to qualify.
NRG’s response on Summit was narrower and more demanding. The Americas team led after its attacking half, but Karmine Corp remained within reach throughout the defense. NRG closed 13-11, avoiding overtime by converting the final regulation opportunities. That result mattered because the series had moved from a six-round loss to a map where one failed close could have ended qualification.
Haven separated the teams in the decider. Karmine Corp reached nine rounds, but NRG’s seven-round attacking half created the platform for a 13-9 finish. The team did not need an extended overtime or a late miracle sequence. It translated the adjustment made on Summit into a cleaner final margin and completed the comeback after losing KC’s Ascent pick.

NRG improved as the series became harder
The three scores show a useful progression. NRG lost the opener by six rounds, won the second map by two and finished the third by four. That sequence does not mean every tactical problem disappeared, but it demonstrates that the roster adjusted inside the best-of-three rather than waiting for another match to correct the issue.
Summit was the hinge because Karmine Corp had already shown it could close a controlled map. NRG needed to defend a small lead under qualification pressure, and the 13-11 score confirms that the margin remained vulnerable until the end. Winning there returned the teams to equal terms and made the decider a test of composure rather than recovery alone.
On Haven, NRG produced enough attacking rounds to avoid chasing the game after halftime. That reduced the need for risky defensive retakes and allowed the team to play around an existing cushion. Karmine Corp still reached nine, but it could not generate the same sustained control that had defined Ascent.
The result also changes how the teams’ opening sweeps should be interpreted. NRG and Karmine Corp both arrived without dropping a map, but the direct meeting forced each to operate from behind. KC responded to pressure on Summit without completing the final step. NRG responded to the Ascent loss by winning two consecutive maps.
This distinction is useful without turning one series into a permanent hierarchy. Karmine Corp remains the EMEA Stage 2 champion and still has a route to playoffs. NRG has secured qualification, but its first-map defeat supplies material for opponents studying the playoff field. Both teams leave the match with evidence to use and weaknesses to address.
For NRG, the practical reward is preparation time. The roster no longer needs to expose another group-stage veto or play under elimination risk. For Karmine Corp, the task becomes more immediate: study the lower-match winner, preserve the strengths shown on Ascent and avoid allowing one difficult map to become another two-map reversal.
Karmine Corp still controls its qualification
Karmine Corp will face the winner of Xi Lai Gaming versus Nongshim RedForce in the Group D decider. That match awards the group’s second playoff place. KC is not dependent on another bracket result beyond learning which opponent advances; one best-of-three victory is enough.
The opponent will arrive after surviving an elimination match. Nongshim lost 0-2 to NRG in the opener, while XLG lost 0-2 to Karmine Corp. A rematch with either side would carry different preparation demands. Previous wins provide data, but an elimination match can expose new compositions and create corrections that were unavailable in the first meeting.
NRG avoids that route after winning both of its group series. The team qualified through a sweep and a comeback, two different forms of success. That variety strengthens the evidence behind the result, although the playoffs will bring opponents with their own two-win routes and more time to study how NRG handled Ascent, Summit and Haven.

NRG recovered from a 13-7 loss on Ascent to win Summit 13-11 and Haven 13-9. The 2-1 victory sends NRG directly to the Champions Shanghai playoffs. Karmine Corp remains alive and will play the survivor of XLG versus Nongshim for Group D’s second place.
