A place at VCT Kickoff will no longer depend entirely on partnership status in 2027. Americas, EMEA and Pacific are each building a 12-team opening event from eight partner organizations and four rosters that survive Open Qualifiers. The first qualifying competition begins in November, giving ambitious teams a concrete entrance into the new season.
One third of every named Kickoff field is therefore decided in open competition. The successful rosters do not join a separate showcase or a secondary exhibition. They take positions in the same event as the established partner teams and compete inside the season’s main structure from its opening stage.
The opportunity can extend beyond that first appearance. Riot’s published framework connects eligible open rosters to Cups, Masters and Champions. A qualifier run can become the start of a full competitive route, provided a team keeps earning the necessary results at each later stage.
November is the only global timing point confirmed in the announcement. Individual territories still control important practical information such as registration, eligibility and bracket organization. Teams can begin planning around the new route, but they need to consult their own regional link before treating any deadline or tournament format as final.

Open teams can progress beyond Kickoff
Previous open brackets could be meaningful without guaranteeing contact with the top level. The 2027 design makes the connection explicit. Four teams arrive at Kickoff through results, then share the competitive environment with eight partner organizations. Their continuation is determined by performance rather than by a separate label attached to their entry route.
That continuity is the central value of the change. Kickoff is not presented as the final reward for the qualifier winner. Open teams remain eligible to move through Cups and into the global stages at Masters or Champions. Each step still has to be earned, but the route no longer ends automatically when the first regional event is complete.
Riot’s wider tour plan lists more than $6 million in annual prize pools and funded travel for global events. Those commitments make international qualification more practical for a roster outside the partnership group. They do not establish the purse of a specific open bracket, which must come from the rules for that competition.
A further support mechanism begins when a non-partner roster reaches a major VCT stage. Riot says those teams will receive a fixed qualification payment in addition to remaining eligible for the prize money attached to the event. The payment recognizes that reaching the stage creates real preparation and operating costs before a final placement is known.
The threshold is important. Entering an Open Qualifier does not by itself trigger the fixed payment. The team must progress to the major VCT level identified in the announcement. Reporting the distinction protects players from expecting support that the published policy does not promise at the registration stage.
Partnership still supplies most of each Kickoff field, with eight of the 12 positions. Open competition supplies the remaining four. That balance keeps an established regional core while requiring every Kickoff to include a substantial group that qualified through the new access system.
Regional details remain the next checkpoint
The global outline is enough to define the opportunity, but not enough to submit an entry. A prospective roster still needs the rules issued for its territory. Several qualifiers may be offered in a region, creating more than one chance to reach Kickoff, yet the announcement does not impose one universal schedule on every organizer.
Riot plans to publish the complete yearly calendar and additional regional guidance later. Until those documents appear, copying a deadline, eligibility rule or bracket from a different territory would create avoidable errors. The correct source for those details is the organizer responsible for the team’s own region.
Preparation can still start before that release. Organizations know the competition begins in November, the target is one of four Kickoff slots and the reward connects to the broader VCT season. What remains unknown is administrative rather than conceptual: the exact process each region will use to decide its four representatives.

Open Qualifiers give non-partner teams four of the 12 places at each Americas, EMEA and Pacific Kickoff. Results can carry those rosters farther into the 2027 tour, and major-stage qualification brings defined financial support. The next essential information will come from the regional rulebooks and full-season calendar.
